Cox at it again.

Looks like Cox is blocking BitTorrent. I can’t use any bittorrent trackers. It seems they don’t realize that people actually use BitTorrent for legal purposes (whodathunkit?) Blocking bittorrent is like banning cars because some people use them to transport drugs. I’m about fed up with Cox’s restrictive policies, and this one has finally pushed me over the edge.

What’s next? I can’t use port 21 to FTP to my BeigeTower account? I can’t use port 6667 to chat on IRC? Cox needs to get their heads out of their asses, and realize that people don’t just use Internet Explorer with their internet service. Who the hell pays $40 a month just to use port 80? Not me. Hell, I’m probably violating their TOS by using linux instead of Windows. Cox is very close to losing one customer, and possibly many more. Take this advice: Your customers are not criminals or second-class citizens, they are people!

EDIT It seems I have spoken prematurely. Torrents work fine in Windows, where I have a less strict firewall… So, I’m going to fiddle with my linux firewall to get things working. Sorry for the rant.

I say you go to their corporate headquarters and give their CEO a swirlie in the company toilets, and then punch the CTO in the face. It has it’s bonuses :D

are they just blocking the typical BT ports?… can you just switch which ports you watch the tracker through and go about your buisness?

I mean they obviously aren’t blocking port 22, or 21

Well see, you’re confused. Cox most likely /is/ blocking port 80, along with port 22 and 21. Those ports are used for incoming connections to servers. A client will connect to an http or ftp server on a random port above the range of the service ports. A typical socket for an http connection would be something like

    (local) :4127
    (remote) :80

Just spoke with cox tech support regarding ftp server access. It appears that they claim they are not blocking ports 21 & 22. However they are blocking outside access. ie:someone within the cox netowork can access an ftp server running in the cox network but it can not be accessed from the outside.
