Computer is out…

Here’s what’s happening with my computer:

  • Plug cord into back of PSU (there is no on/off switch on it)
  • Press power button
  • Only case fan spins and PSU fan spins for ~1 or 2 seconds then stops. CPU fan doesn’t spin at all. Nothing else happens. No power light or anything.
  • Hit power again, nothing else happens
  • Unplug and plug in PSU again
  • Hit power button, same as above (fans spin for a second, except CPU).

Here’s what I’ve disconnected to help rule things out:

  • Audio card
  • DVD drive
  • Hard drive
  • RAM
  • USB connectors

After that I got the same results as above.

I also tested the PSU (by touching metal to the green and black wires) and it spins up for as long as I have it connected. So it may not be the PSU, but I’m still not ruling it out, as one of the molex connectors (e.g. the 12V rail) could be bad.

My personal diagnosis: Most likely motherboard, possibly CPU or PSU.

Anybody have any ideas???

UPDATE: …I bought a new PSU from Best Buy, and replaced my old one to see if it would work. Well, it did pretty much the same thing (except this time the power LED actually came on for a second, then it died again.) So I’m going to return the power supply, and looks like I may have to get a new motherboard. MAYBE a new CPU (if it’s dead, I’ll have to, if not, I may just want to upgrade to something better, probably an X2)… most people are telling me this is the case. Hopefully nothing else got damaged, none of the capacitors are raised, so that might be a good sign, but I can’t check the hard drive (I don’t have everything backed up) or the DVD drive.

Could be a grounding issue or blown capaciters (unlikely). Make sure whatever else is still connected is properly connected. Motherboard is a likely suspect.
